Quel / Ce
There are four ways to say "Which" in French. The one you choose depends on the gender and number of the noun that comes next. This is because "Which" is an interrogative ADJECTIVE. In English, "which" and "what" are sometimes interchangeable. For example: Which word do you not understand? / What word do you not understand? In French, you must use a form of "QUEL" in this case. "Quel" can also be used in French to exclaim something: What a great class! What smart students! The construction is slightly different than in English. See the notes to the right for details.

In French, there are not separate words for this/that or these/those. There is one set of words, and you choose based on the gender / number of the noun that comes next. There is an exception for masculine singular words that begin with a vowel sound. If you want to distinguish between "this" and "that" or "these" and "those," just add "-ci" and "-là" to the end of the noun. See the notes to the left.
