My love of languages and learning about other cultures has taken me all over the world. While this page is not about "FRENCH," the images contained here would not be possible had I not fallen in love with studying French.. After college, I became a French teacher in New York and then in Georgia. After eight years of teaching, I joined the Peace Corps and taught English in Nepal. Upon my return to teaching French in the United States, I met a parent who knew I wanted to travel to Asia again to teach during the summer. She introduced me to a Sikh school in Northern India, and while there, I conducted Pedagogy Classes, Comparative Religion Classes, and Poetry Workshops. Learning one language - in my case, French - led to other languages, which led to more and more incredible experiences. Learning French changed my life.
While at Akal Academy in Baru Sahib, India, I led poetry workshops for middle and high school students. Many of the students told me that the poem they wrote in my class was the very first poem they had ever written. My intent was was to send all the poems to an online organization called "Poems for Peace." Unfortunately, the founder of that organization took her website offline soon after my second year at Baru Sahib. For that reason, I would like to post pictures of my students and their poetry here, now. You will notice that the students are all wearing turbans. The majority of the boys and girls at my school are Sikhs, and wearing a turban over their unshorn hair is an article of faith.
I hope you will enjoy what my Indian students have written. I also hope that you will see that learning a language is about way more than sitting in a classroom and memorizing vocabulary. It really can change your life.
